Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
An overall mixed bag of offerings featuring vintage lumber issued to and possibly used by some of the best players the National Hockey League has ever play in it, offered here is this collection of seven (7) game sticks that date to the early-1970s that includes examples for players such as Jacques Plante, Bobby Hull, Serge Savard, Jacques Lemaire, Rogie Vachon, Dale Tallon and Les Binkley. A mix of Sher-Wood (Binkley and Tallon), Victoriaville (Plante, Vachon, Savard and Lemaire) and CCM (Hull) models, it is important to note that all the included sticks are being offered only as game sticks and not game-used sticks as all of them sport tape jobs that differ from what the player stamped on the upper shafts usually is seen in images using or were retaped at some point in time. All dating to the early-1970s, a breakdown of each stick is as follows;
Plante: Based on the Maillot & Freres stamp on both sides of the upper shaft the stick can be no later than a 1970-71 offering as in 1971-72 the company switched to "Victoriaville Hockey Sticks Limited". Would be a first year or very early second year Toronto Maple Leafs stick based on the "1" stamp since he didnt wear the number during his time in St. Louis.
Hull: No Gunzo's stamp over the upper shaft but correct stampings over the shaft. Possibly made for Hull to use at the 1971 NHL All-Star Game based on other examples of similar sticks that have come to market and has Hull's correct notch at the top of the shaft.
Savard: Stick is broken, but based on the Maillot & Freres stamp on both sides of the upper shaft the stick can be no later than a 1970-71 offering as in 1971-72 the company switched to "Victoriaville Hockey Sticks Limited".
Lemaire: Based on the Maillot & Freres stamp on both sides of the upper shaft the stick can be no later than a 1970-71 offering as in 1971-72 the company switched to "Victoriaville Hockey Sticks Limited". Likely a late-1960s or early-1970s based on the lack of "25" stamp, with the number instead handwritten. No tape on blade which does match up with what Lemaire was known for but the tape on the handle/knob is wrong as per other examples that have come to market and with what is seen in images from the era.
Vachon: Stick appears to be the correct model in terms of what Vachon was using in the early-1970s during near the end of his time with the Montreal Canadiens or his first couple of years with the Kings. Based on the Maillot & Freres stamp on both sides of the upper shaft the stick can be no later than a 1970-71 offering as in 1971-72 the company switched to "Victoriaville Hockey Sticks Limited".
Tallon: Either from the early-1970s when he was a member of the Vancouver Canucks or around 1976 based on the stampings. No Gunzo's supplier stamp over the shaft.
Binkley: appears to be the correct model in terms of what he was using in the early-1970s during his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His image on the from of his 72-73 OPC WHA card shows him using a Sher-Wood stick with a different (larger) stamping. Stick dates to circa-1971 based on the stamps used when compared with similar model sticks used by both Ken Dryden and Eddie Giacomin.
All showing various signs of use including numerous marks and abrasions with some also either broken/cracked or sporting moderate-to-heavy wear to the bottom of the blades, a vintage youth goalie stick made by Victoriaville is also present and accounted for but is not attributed to any professional teams and/or players. Overall, a fun lot filled with vintage lumber to add to your collection!
