Pre-war and vintage card enthusiasts have plenty to be enthused about this time around, with a chance to score another scarce, desirable and fascinating set here. For the second straight season, Brantford, Ontario’s William Paterson Company included a card with its chocolate bars, with the Bruins and Maroons joining the NHL and the V145 lineup in 1924-25 and the Paterson issue increasing from 40 to 60 cards. The four most important, valuable and mesmerizing have recently been assessed by PSA with Georges Vezina’s card #43 earning a mark of EX 5, the Pop 5 edged only by four EX-MT 6s in the history of PSA. The Canadiens’ dynamic duo of Howie Morenz (GOOD+ 2.5) and Aurele Joliat (VG+ 3.5) appear early in their careers and after having led the Habs to the Stanley Cup the previous spring – Montreal would again take the NHL title the season that these cards were available. The card of icon Frank Clancy is at GOOD 2, while fellow Hall of Famer 14-Shorty Green is in an older PSA holder labeled VG-EX 4. Two other cards were also encapsulated several years ago; #1-Joe Ironstone RC received a 4-VGE mark from ASA (definitely not a VG-EX example with creases and soiling), while 7-Clint Benedict is in an early KSA holder and graded 6-ENM. The raw contingent is dominated by attractive crease-free VG, VG+ and VG-EX examples, with some EX representatives also to come upon, along with some impressive white backs. The first half-dozen are among the condition exceptions, with 2-G. Boucher (minor back damage), 4-Hitchman and 5-Hooley Smith RC (peripheral creasing) and 6-Nighbor (smidgeon of paper loss on the front) noteworthy. Six others also have creases or other grade-lowering flaws; #s 13-Burch, 28-Redding RC, 31-Stuart, 37-Rothschild RC, 46-B. Boucher and 60-Jackson. Just over half of the set (31 cards) carry “RC” designations. It’s intriguing to check out first-year Bruins and Maroons, along with the other alluring images. Good luck in securing this important and tempting assembly.
