Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Fascinating, alluring and riveting are William Paterson V145-1 hockey cards, with the issue's history, it’s incredible lineup and the haunting images all contributing to the mystique and desirability. Hobbyists with experience are aware that cards could be collected and exchanged (a full 40-card set) for a pair of hockey skates, with the card of Bert Corbeau short-printed so as to lessen the number of prize redemptions. The Corbeau example is not present here, nor are any punch holes in the cards. Redeemed cards can also be found with a date and "Cancelled" stamped on the back but none of the offered cards here are affected by the marks. For the group being offered here, a trio of freshly graded PSA examples lead the way, housing the cards of HOFers #15 Howie Morenz (GD 2), #3 King Clancy (RC – FR 1.5) and #19 Georges Vezina (Auth. Alt.). For the rest of the cards making up the near complete assembly, most of those present are first-year offerings and are led by a VG range copy of card #18 picturing Odie Cleghorn while cards in the G to VG scope total six (6) and include the likes of 7-Benedict (HHOF), 9-Broadbent (HHOF), 20-Arbour (RC), 22-Stuart (RC), 29-Forbes (RC) and 32-Prodgers. Moving on to cards in the range of GOOD+, the largest grouping is present via twelve (12) examples that includes the cardboard of 2-Nighbor (RC – HHOF), 8-Hitchman (RC), 10-Denenny (RC – HHOF), 13-Malone (HHOF), 14-Joliat (RC – HHOF – marked on the reverse), 16-Bouhcer (RC), 17-Coutu (RC), 21-Andrews (RC), 27-Jackson (RC), 28-Roach (RC), 31-Green (RC) and 37-Bouchard (RC). Moving into the latter half of the set, cards seen as being in the range of GOOD include those of 4-Darragh (HHOF), 11-Cleghorn (HHOF), 30-Green (RC – HHOF) and 33-Reise (RC) while cards views as being in the range of FR include 1-Gerrard (HHOF), 12-Mantha (RC – HHOF), 36-Spring (RC), 38-Roach (RC) and 40-Denenny (RC). Lastly, the cards of 5-Helman (RC), 6-Boucher (RC – HHOF), 23-Dye (RC – HHOF), 24-Adams (RC – HHOF), 26-Noble (RC – HHOF), 34-Randall (RC) and 35-Burch (RC – HHOF) fall into the vicinity of PR while the cardboard of #39 Charles Fraser has been deemed to be altered due to a trimmed corner at the top left.
