Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
The most challenging to assemble among the three tobacco card sets produced prior to the formation of the National Hockey League is the C57 issue from 1912-13, with thus a special opportunity here. The cards of hockey immortals George Vezina, (with an (MK) qualifier due to a couple of small pencil marks on the reverse), Art Ross, Newsy Lalonde and Joe Malone all received marks of GOOD 2 upon their recent inspection at PSA premises, while the condition leader among 14 encapsulated contributors is Fred Taylor’s example at VG-EX 4, the image of “Cyclone” similarly riveting as the aforementioned. Other Hall of Fame legends slabbed GOOD 2 are 19-Harry Hyland, 23-Gordon Roberts and 25-Ernie Johnson, with other 2s being 12-Smith, 22-Smaill and 33-Kerr. Completing the graded portion are 8-Poulin at VG 3 and two at PR 1; 15-Sprague Cleghorn and 28-Ridpath. The raw representatives are a low grade mix with however a majority (21 cards) free of unsightly heavy creases/wear and displaying similarly to the graded superstars, (with a couple of commons making it to VG and VG+), while the other 15 are admittedly rougher. The nicer group is led by Lester Patrick, one of hockey’s greatest contributors, joined by fellow HOFers 3-Benedict RC, 5-Dunderdale, 26-Russell, 27-LeSueur, 29-Darragh, 34-Gerard RC, 46-Laviolette and 49-Walsh, while the lesser group features mostly commons, with the exception of 1-Broadbent RC, 16-Hall, 24-Gardiner, 45-Pitre and 50-Odie Cleghorn. Overall mighty respectable, with the somewhat haunting images and the issue’s scarcity contributing to the allure. A splendid addition to your pre-war card shrine this ensemble will be, with light scratches to the PSA holders limited to the older slabs.
