Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
A hoard of O-Pee-Chee baseball cards, wrappers and display boxes from the 1980s is on the auction block here, with a monster box housing complete sets from 1981, ’83 and ’88, along with other goodies. The cards exhibit only minimal handling – expect mostly EX-MT to NM-MT contributors - with fun to be had zeroing-in on the intermittent MINT representatives. Memorable stars and Hall of Famers of the era lead the roster, with of course, standard not-always-perfect OPC centering observed. Tony Gwynn’s rookie card from the ’83 (396-card) set is NM+, while some edge roughness drops that of Ryne Sandberg to the EX-MT vicinity. It should be noted that the ‘83s exhibit a rather pronounced curvature. The ’81 issue (slighter curvature) is a 374-card effort, with rookie cards of Raines and Baines notable and then 396 cards comprising the ’88 set, although actually, it’s a near set; 394-McGwire is not present. There are extras, with duplication and no real big names from ’83 (approximately 350) and ’88 (upwards of 300), with a complete ’83 OPC sticker set (of 330) a swell complement and in similar tiptop condition. There are plenty of wrapper complements too – how do you feel about over two dozen ‘81s and 100+ from ’83? – with one ’81 display box and three ‘83s. The boxes were separated at the four corners to be stored flat – they might be able to be pasted/taped back together for display purposes. One row of the monster box is full of well over 100 unopened team-themed 1981 cello packs, with the similar-to-’81-Topps cards bearing a Coca-Cola logo in an upper corner and three player cards per pack, some of which have warped with time. The same three teams keep coming around; the Red Sox, Cardinals and Astros, with stars and Hall of Famers showing on some. Oh, and one lone unopened ’81 OPC pack puts an end to this description. Well, we should end off with, “you’ll be in for some perusing fun when you become the new (second) owner of this interesting stash.”
