Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022

An intriguing batch of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee cards is on the auction block here, with famous card #18 featuring that teenage wizard from Brantford, Ontario, Wayne Gretzky, recently returning from KSA in a holder labeled “5 EX”. Not-drastic wear at each corner contributed to the assessment, with vivid blue borders and an apparent immaculate surface notable attributes. The 395 raw contributors, housed in 9-pocket sheets and a binder, include a strong majority as nice or superior to the Gretz RC, with numerous random pulls revealing high grade characteristics, the cards’ thinness and crispness quite remarkable/striking, with smooth edges observed more often than not…and appreciated. White corner specks here and there are spotted, along with a few miscuts and diamond cuts but EX-MT, EX-MT+ and NM (or higher) examples can be anticipated. Not all are as just described, with some of the key cards mirroring the Gretzky RC (Oilers team logo/checklist, 175-Howe) or inferior (185-Hull, Jets and Whalers logos/checklists). The three checklists, although unmarked, are weak with creasing, while the team checklists are all unmarked. Admittedly unattractive (when compared to the set) are the over 500 extras that can be considered throw-ins, with corner wear/dings and intermittent creases sending most to VG or lower, with however VG+ and VG-EX cards also involved, along with the odd EX-or-better example. Noteworthy star and rookie cards are sparse. Gretzky’s cherished rookie card, in a scratch-free KSA holder, and the rest, await your bid.
