Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
The brainchild of Wayne Gretzky and friends, the Ninety Nine All Stars Tour was created to promote hockey around the globe as well as raise money for charity during the 1994-95 NHL lockout. Matches were contested against both professional and all-star clubs, with 8 total games played in 5 different countries during the tour. With Doug Wilson chosen as head coach and Wayne taking on assistant duties, others who joined the noteworthy cause included Paul Coffey, Brett Hull, Mark Messier and Steve Yzerman, with the “Ninety-Nine” team winning 5 of the 8 games played, including an 8-5 win over a team of German all-stars on Dec 14th 1994. This “Ninety-Nine Tour” captain’s jersey worn and signed by The Great One was presented to the winner of a radio contest by Gretzky himself, with the jersey and signature photo-matched to the included photo showing Wayne and our consignor posing with the desirable jersey.
A Maska Ultrafil label along with size “56” fly tag sit affixed to the collar, with dual-embroidered CCM crests on the reverse hem (there is also a washed-out production sticker of “94 11” affixed to the label). Styled with “Ninety-Nine” embroidered across the chest in attractive script, the white sweater features affixed tackle twill stars on the upper and lower front, along with a tri-layer captain’s “C”, with the verso number repeated in matching material. A pair of sponsorship patches also grace each shoulder, with the NHLPA crest over the right breast. Wayne has signed at the base of the first reverse “9” in black marker, with “Dec 6 1994” handwritten to the base of the second “9”. Exhibiting light use with a few marks visible (some are not from game-use), there are also a few faint stains to the lower left sleeve and lower reverse. A DVD of the game is also included, and despite the low resolution, the captain's "C" placement/particularities are matching, with the small loose blue string between the "P" and "A" of "NHLPA" also visible, but not clear enough to be called a definitive photo-match. A signed LOA from our consignor will also accompany, along with the aforementioned photo-match image.
