Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
One of the most feared duos in NHL history with Bob Probert, earning the fitting "Bruise Brothers" moniker and surpassed in mayhem by only Sprague Cleghorn and Billy Coutu, Joey Kocur - while especially adept at physical play - also scored important playoff goals in the Detroit Red Wings’ pursuit of Lord Stanley in 1997 and 1998. The heavily penalized Kocur would win his first of three Stanley Cup championships as a player during his time in Manhattan with the Blueshirts, and from that historic campaign we offer an especially noteworthy New York Rangers jersey worn by the Kelvington native during the 1993-94 playoffs, photo-matched to the Eastern Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Finals! Gerry Cosby labeling, a CCM tag and size “54” fly tag is affixed to the collar, with embroidered CCM and NHL crests over the reverse hem. Styled with “Rangers” placed diagonally across the chest in individual blue-over-red drop-shadow tackle twill letters, “26” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals patch on the left shoulder. The garment also sports a dual-clasp fight strap, with Gerry Cosby label added above along with “93” and ?? handwritten. Exhibiting heavy use throughout with numerous stick marks over the lower front, there are additional marks and stains to the sleeves, with a large concentration of somewhat washed-out blood staining over the front. Team repairs also assure prolonged use, with examples located on the front (2), reverse (3), neckline (1), shoulders (3) and sleeves (approx 35). Hailing from Joey Kocur’s personal collection, this is one of Broadway’s best modern jerseys. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
Kocur played in 6 of the 7 games of the Stanley Cup Finals, played all 7 games of the Eastern Conference Finals, played all 5 games of the Conference Semifinals and played 2 of the 4 games of the Conference Quarterfinals. While not adding offensively, Kocur’s on-ice presence was a determining factor in the Rangers Stanley Cup success. In fact, the ultimate tough guy’s hand were so beat, that he was unable to play in the concluding game of the finals. Regarding the photo-matches, Getty Image #141815574 (May 23, 1994 Eastern Conference Finals) has been matched to the shorter black mark and black dot below the team crest, with the team repair and the whiteish mark on the lower right sleeve in the blue striping area also visible, while photo-matched to Stanley Cup Finals game #1 Getty Image #1039408894 (May 31, 1994 Stanley Cup Finals Game 1) has been matched to the two black marks below the team crest and the black dot in between them, as well as to the series of small black marks at the right of the lower portion of the "6" of "26" on the right sleeve.
