Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

One of the most collected of the old defunct NHL clubs despite their routinely dismal regular season finishes, the New York Americans are fondly remembered most notably for their visually stunning and patriotic team sweaters, arguably the best the sport has ever seen. The Amerks were the first NHL club representing The Big Apple, with their inaugural season occurring in 1925-26, playing out as Brooklyn during their final swan-song season of 1941-42. We have a gorgeous Americans sweater, with this example attributed to have been worn by Joe Lamb during the late-1930s. Lamb - who would see action with a number of clubs throughout his decade plus of NHL service including Boston, Montreal and Ottawa - would skate for the Amerks in both 1936-37 and 1937-38.
With the collar completely void of tagging, a clean label from Brown’s Sports & Cycle in Toronto sits affixed to the inside hem. Featuring a classic red, white and blue Americans’ team crest fully administered in felt over felt construction, six felt stars appear along both the front and verso, arching slightly over the team crest and reverse number respectively. Red accent striping bands and cuffs have also been utilized, with shoulder bands that continue along the full length of the sleeves. A few small holes are present near the team crest and over the right sleeve, with team repairs over each sleeve and the reverse. There are also a few marks just beneath the reverse neckline, with some minor bleeding of the red colouring onto the cream-coloured material beneath the front neckline. We should also note that Lamb played 25 games before he was traded to the Red Wings on January 24th 1938, with a photo in our possession of John Sorrell wearing #14 at the end of the 1937-38 season, (was acquired in a trade Feb 13th 1938, played 17 regular season games plus 6 playoffs games) with the possibility of this jersey being worn by Sorrell as well.
Surviving in especially pleasing condition with bright colours and wonderful aesthetics, this New York Americans wool sweater is an ideal candidate from prominent display within even the most visually stunning grouping of historically important hockey artifacts.
