Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Extremely knowledgeable as a longtime commentator on Hockey Night in Canada and the author of over 90 books on hockey, Brian McFarlane also serves as Honorary President of the Society for International Hockey Research, and was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in 2020. Originating from his personal collection and the definite prerequisite to any important hockey library, this leather-bound three-volume set of “The Trail of the Stanley Cup” by Author Charles Coleman features the complete history of hockey and Lord Stanley's trophy from 1893 to 1967. Only 1,000 copies of the special leather-bound editions of the first and second volumes were produced and presented to important hockey figures, while the third was limited to 1,500 copies. This three volume matched set has each book numbered “238”, with McFarlane’s bookplate added to the inside cover of the first volume. Each volume is also accompanied by its original attractive black slip cover with gilded image of the Stanley Cup. A signed LOA from Brian McFarlane will accompany.
The books remain in pleasing condition showing handling wear and toning to the interior pages, with handwritten notes presumably by McFarlane in volumes 1 and 2. The second volume also sports a few large tears to the first couple pages. The slip covers all show heavier wear, with one having just a small tear and a dinged edge, one has a partially-torn apron, and the final slip cover has the top and bottom aprons torn, with the top detached and the bottom almost detached.
