Talk about an iconic catch by a baseball icon! Willie Mays’ famous running, over-the-shoulder catch of a Vic Wertz smash to deep centerfield at New York’s Polo Grounds in the first game of the (nationally televised) 1954 World Series was immortalized on cardboard by Topps in its 1959 Baseball Thrills subset, with the write-up on the back of card #464 concluding, “The fans in the park and throughout the nation gulped. It was the greatest catch in World Series history, if not of all time.” The person who pulled this authentic card, signed by Willie Mays and hand-numbered “03/04” in the upper right corner, likely gulped upon discovering it in a pack of 2004 Topps Original Signature Edition Baseball cards. The buyback rarity is encased and securely sealed, with a Topps hologram affixed to the back (of the card itself) featuring “8710461.” We do not spot any creases in the card, with corner wear rendering it VG+ or VG-EX. A few light scratches to the holder are also to mention. An interesting and captivating piece awaits your big-time Mays/card collection.
