Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

A Wayne Gretzky rookie card recently earning NM 7 status in the PSA examination room leads the allure of this 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee assembly, with a couple of lightly touched corners all that we can detect. The clarity of the (right of center) image and the immaculate-looking surface are attributes, while the two thin horizontal blue lines on the back, (through the puck at the bottom of the cartoon), are an indication, in the opinion of some hobbyists, of a first print run, while others do not concur. Meanwhile, the accompanying 395 cards, housed in Ultra Pro Platinum 9-pocket pages, look to resemble the Gretz rookie or be in the same vicinity, although several of the pulled stars and rookie cards exhibit a lightly touched corner or more and/or a light corner ding, prompting us to say that EX-MT may well be the dominant grade, with NM-or-better examples also to be anticipated, along with a small percentage making it to “only” EX+ or EX. All checklists and team checklists are unmarked, with the Oilers logo/checklist at EX+ and the three checklists all EX-MT. A dozen tiny white print “circles” affect the front of the Bobby Hull card (otherwise NM), with one such flaw observed in the bottom border of the (similar condition) Gordie Howe example. Bossy, Dryden, Lafleur and rookie cards of Smith, Simmer, Tonelli, Semenko, Melrose, Linseman and four dozen others also contribute to this ever-popular issue, rendered so by that Gretzky guy.
