Peter Mahovlich left his mark as a member of “Canada’s Team of the Century” when he scored a sensational shorthanded goal in Game 2 of the legendary 1972 Canada-Russia series. The memories of that elite hockey showdown remain strong nearly 50 years later for those who witnessed and experienced the titanic struggle. But more Team Canada 1972 members have left us with each passing year making signed commemorative anniversary items more and more precious. These two items from Peter Mahovlich’s personal collection include a team-signed “Canada’s Team of the Century” limited edition player’s edition lithograph autographed by 29 members of Team Canada 1972. Artist Daniel Parry signed in pencil on the lower right, just below the late John Ferguson’s black ballpoint autograph. The “5/40 PE” limited edition notation in pencil is just below HOF coach Harry Sinden’s signature on the bottom right. Including Ferguson, there are a total of eight deceased team members who have signed, including HOFers Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito and Rod Gilbert, as well as Rick Martin, Brian Glennie, Bill White and Pat Stapleton. Phil Esposito, Brad Park, Yvan Cournoyer, Frank Mahovlich, Marcel Dionne, Jean Ratelle, Guy Lapointe and Serge Savard (who has signed twice) make a total 12 members of the Hockey Hall of Fame who have signed. Pete Mahovlich and Summit Series hero Paul Henderson have also signed along with Vic Hadfield, Don Awrey, Dale Tallon, Wayne Cashman, Rod Seiling, Ed Johnston, Ron Ellis, Dennis Hull, Jocelyn Guevremont and Red Berenson. Measuring 21 ½” x 25 ½”, this nearly 20-year-old litho comes with a COA and is nicely preserved with wear to the corners on the right side and a faint vertical black mark on the right side through the two Savard autographs and Mikita’s that do not diminish its display. Also included is a Team Canada 1972 team-signed “Team of the Century” hockey stick coat rack. Featured is one of the three sticks that is autographed in bold black marker by 26, including Henderson and HOFers Phil Esposito, Mikita, Gilbert, Park, Lapointe, Cournoyer and Dionne, as well as Johnston, Hull, Pete Mahovlich, Tallon, Stapleton, Guevremont, Cashman, Martin, Awrey, Berenson, Glennie, Hadfield, Seiling and White. The toe of the blade is broken off roughly, just touching Serge Savard’s autograph while affecting the left side of the autographs placed by Ron Ellis and the late J.P. Parise.
