Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
All sorts of adjectives – astonishing, dazzling, formidable, outstanding, exceptional, mouth-watering and plenty more – can be used to describe this thought-provoking labor of love that contributed to our consignor being honored as a PSA Certificate Award Winner in 2020 for his Guy Lafleur Master Set. A GEM MT 10 Lafleur 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee rookie card that joined the 175 encapsulated beauties here is being offered in a separate auction lot, so 175 of the 177 cards that make up Guy’s master set are what you’re bidding on. The rookie card and these 175 cards combined for a weighted GPA of 9.04, a GPA with Top Pop Bonuses of 9.68 and a set rating of 9.62 – the All-Time Finest Guy Lafleur Master Set!
All the contributing elements are listed on the PSA Set Registry and are the pride of “Alwayshabs” but we’ll detail some of the interesting/alluring components for you here, starting with conventional trading cards and Guy’s regular issues. Guy’s second-year ’72-73 Topps (GEM MT 10) and OPC (NM-MT+8.5) cards lead chronologically, with OPC and Topps cards from ’73-74 both at MINT 9, the same as ’74-75 Topps, while a ’74-75 OPC is NM 7. From ’75-76 is a MINT 9 OPC and a GEM MT 10 Topps and then all OPC and Topps regular issues for the rest of the 1970s, (when Guy was lifting excited and cheering Canadiens’ fans out of their seats with his scoring exploits!), are MINT 9 – awesome – with the exception of ’79-80 OPC (NM-MT 8).
Now then, as for the GEM MT 10 entries, there are a remarkable 80! items that merited PSA’s highest rating, while (29) MINT 9s are tied for first place (none higher) on their respective “lines” of the PSA Population Report. The 10s that are peerless Pop 1s include ’73-74 Topps Canadiens Team, ’76-77 OPC Canadiens Team, ’78-79 OPC Assist Leaders and Scoring Leaders and ’80-81 Topps Canadiens Team Leaders/Checklist, with a couple of stickers Pop 1 MINT 9s. “Master” of course means all Leader, Record Breaker, Highlight, All-Star cards and other “specials”, along with Habs team cards – they’re all here! So are almost all the Canadiens team-issued postcards, Sportscaster cards, OPC and Topps stickers, food and other issues and cards from the late-1980s and early-‘90s when Guy made his memorable comeback – in a word, mind-boggling. We’ve shown much of the amazing collection – it has been well cared for and is housed in special slotted PSA plastic boxes, some obvious scratches to several of the large (postcard, Sportscaster) PSA holders. Good luck with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
