Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/27/2021
A rare occurrence – especially for an international match – with the visiting supporters outnumbering those of the host country, this was the case with the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Rabid Canadians flooded over the border from Winnipeg in southern Manitoba, and even Ontario, and descended upon Ralph Engelstad arena in Grand Forks to cheer their country onto victory. Those who made the journey were rewarded with an epic Canadian gold-medal win with the squad recognized as one of the greatest junior teams in history. This Team Canada jersey was worn at the tournament by Dion Phaneuf who played in all 6 games and scored in the gold medal match vs Russia. IIHF and Nike labels grace the collar with “56” sizing, with a Nike swoosh logo on the reverse neckline. Styled with the classic Hockey Canada team crest, “3” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with vintage-style alternate crests affixed to each shoulder. Sporting light game-use, there are a few faint burns and marks, with a Nike bar code heat-pressed to the inside hem. Getty Image #51904287 (Dec 30 vs Finland) appears to show the extended thread at the bottom left of the team crest, but as no other matching traits can be seen, the image is not considered a definitive photo-match. An LOA from Hockey Canada will accompany.
