Dressing for six different clubs throughout his 13 NHL seasons, defenceman Bob McGill was drafted by Toronto and made his debut for the club in 1981-82. Obtained directly from trainer Guy Kinnear in 1987 according to our consignor, we have a Maple Leafs alternate captain’s jersey worn by McGill in 1986-87. Sporting the King Clancy Memorial Patch as well as the Heart & Stroke crest, the Clancy Memorial patch was applied on the left arm of all home and road Maple Leafs jerseys shortly after Clancy’s death on Nov 10, 1986, while the Heart & Stroke crest was applied to home jerseys and makes its first appearance Feb 14, 1987 in a game against Boston (the NHL disallowed the Leafs from wearing the Heart & Stroke patch on road sweaters). With no tagging remaining and measuring-out to roughly a size 52, the classic Leafs team crest has been utilized with tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers, with the Clancy patch on the left shoulder, Heart & Stroke crest on the right shoulder. Given Clancy’s all-time status with the club along with the fact that these patches were only worn together during the second half of the 1986-87 season, Leafs jerseys featuring both are some of the hardest and most desirable for collectors.
Exhibiting a number of team repairs including a long example that most likely resulted from a fight that runs from the middle of the front collar down to the team crest, with a few examples just to the right of the top of the team crest, other repairs are situated on the sleeves and total five. There is also some pilling over the front. We should further note that the image used for the listing appears to be showing the long team repair at the base of the front collar, but the image is not in high enough resolution to be called a definitive photo-match.
