Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

Absolutely magnificent, utterly rare and patriotically historic piece from Peter Mahovlich’s personal collection, this original 1924 Canadian Olympic Hockey Team 1924 gold medalists framed team photo features HOFers Hooley Smith, Harry Watson and W.A. Hewitt among the 12 team members pictured posed in their snappy Canada cardigans. Canada won its second straight Olympic hockey gold medal with a dominant performance at the first Olympic Winter Games held in Chamonix, France. The Toronto Granites represented Canada and scored an astounding 132 goals in five games, outscoring its three Group A opponents 85-0 in round-robin play against Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Switzerland. The gold medal was never in doubt and ultimately secured in the final round with a 19-2 win over Great Britain on Feb. 1 and a 6-1 win over the United States on Feb. 3, and Watson’s 37 goals in the tournament remain an untouchable Olympic record. The original period photo with “Canadian Olympic Hockey Team 1924” and players names listed at the bottom displays within a red matte to 8 ½” x 13” as mounted in a 15 ¼” x 19 ¼” wood frame. There is a small stain on the head of Duncan Munro, seated second from the right in the front row, and some stains on the title and team member names that do not diminish this historic photo’s brilliant display quality and exemplary contrast (the header with handwritten titles and typed-over names is slightly loose from the mount). We should also note that Mr Mahovlich seems to remember receiving the photo many years ago from longtime Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Danny Gallivan. This is the only example of this particular scare and desirable image we have ever encountered. Comes with Peter Mahovlich’s signed LOA.
Addendum; Please take note that the paper covering the back of the frame was removed.
