Created by Elzie Crisler Segar and first appearing in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre in 1929, Popeye the one-eyed sailor later starred in a series of theatrical cartoon shorts for Paramount Pictures, and was famously portrayed by Robin Williams in the 1980 film Popeye. This lot offers a pair of framed King Feature displays featuring Popeye playing golf, with a Sericel produced in 1998 limited to 1,000 copies (373/1000) and an animation cel produced in 1991 signed by Myron Waldman and limited to 250 editions (146/250). First, the Sericel is approx 12” x 16” (exposed), and pictures Popeye is full swing, using a spinach can for the base of the tee. A Kings Features seal appears over the bottom left, with the limited-edition number handwritten. Double-matted and framed to roughly 21” x 24”, a COA listing the particulars is inserted into a folder on the reverse. The animation cel is 10” x 12” (exposed), with Popeye, Bluto and Wimpy all pictured on the green, with a King Features seal over the bottom left along with the limited-edition number and Myron Waldman signature. Framed to approx 18” x 20 ½”, there is just wear to each frame to note.
