Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Still an especially fierce competitor despite a veteran of almost 15 NHL seasons, a young Stan Mikita learnt a valuable lesson after slashing Gordie Howe early in his career and calling the superstar “an old man”, with Mr Hockey returning the kindness to the rookie with a check that caused a concussion. From the era when the legendary superstar was anything but washed-up, we have a stick used by Howe in the early-1960s that has been signed by himself and seven other Motor City teammates. A Northland Pro model with “Howe” stamped and “9” handwritten, additional stamps from team supplier Olympic grace each side of the shaft, with the original black tape in place on the blade and handle. Sporting just minimal use including a few marks to the lower shaft, with the stick remaining in rarely-seen high grade, eight have signed including Howe (signed as “Gordon”, with fading occurring), along with Alex Delvecchio, Marcel Pronovost (faded), Gerry Odrowski, Hank Bassen, Claude LaForge (faded), Val Fonteyne (faded) and one other. Based on the signers, the stick would originate from either the 1960-61 or 1961-62 NHL season.
