Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
A veteran of over 1,000 NHL contests, with the majority played while wearing the historic jersey of the Detroit Red Wings, Kirk Maltby spent parts of 14 seasons in Motor City and hoisted Lord Stanley’s hardware four times with the club. From his final Stanley Cup championship, we have signed skates worn by Maltby during the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs, photo-matched to both the Western Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Finals. Bauer Supreme 7000 models with Tuuk Custom+ blade holders, stickers with “Maltby 9-10” have been affixed to the underside of each boot, with “SCF 08” handwritten to the interior tendon guard on each. A price tag with barcode from the Red Wings team store has also been affixed to the outer tendon guard on the left skate. Sporting heavy game-use with marks over the blade holders and cuts and wear to the material on the boots, there is also pilling to the tongues and heavy salting/oxidation to the grommets. The outside left skate has been signed in silver, with the signature bleeding into the material. We should further note that the images used for the photo-matches of the finals show the blade holders exhibiting much less wear than currently present. As images show Maltby wearing different models at the start of the 2008-09 season, these specimens were most likely worn again while training or in practices during the 2008-09 season.
Regarding the photo-matches, Getty Image #81067569 (May 12, 2008 Game 3 Western Conference Final) has been matched to the distinct wear marks just above the Bauer logo on the inside right skate, with the additional wear mark near the toe section also visible. Next, Getty Image #81240111 (May 26, 2008 Game 2 Stanley Cup Final) has been matched to the swerving dark streak on the upper inside section of the Tuuk blade holder on the right skate, with the mark directly to the right of the Tuuk logo at the tip also visible. The image is also matched to the dark mark near the toe on the inside section of the Tuuk blade holder on the left skate, with the lowest grommet also showing a matching worn surface. Additionally, Getty Image #81319228 (May 31, 2008 Game 4 Stanley Cup Final) has been matched to the swerving dark streak on the upper inside section of the Tuuk blade holder on the right skate, with the mark directly to the left of the Tuuk logo also matching. A few particularities on the left skate are hard to make out but appear to match, including the cut to the leather between the first and second grommets on the right side, and the extended black threading visible where the white plastic section rises between the leather on the right side. Lastly, Getty Image #81368604 (June 2, 2008 Game 5 Stanley Cup Final) has been matched to the pattern of dark marks on the inside reverse of the Tuuk blade holder on the right skate, with the shape and placement matching. The cut to the leather on the inside upper left of the left skate near the second grommet can also been seen.
