Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Employed as the artist for the Hockey Hall of Fame throughout the 1990s, Doug West produced the artwork for the gorgeous “Legends of Hockey” postcards issued from 1992 to 1996 that featured the greatest names in hockey history. This lot contains a complete set of 90 postcards, with 48 signed including 31 deceased Hall of Fame members. There are 48 signatures out of the possible 49 that were living at the time. The only possible unsigned card is Bobby Orr. At the standard postcard size of 3 ½” x 5 ½” and featuring a portrait and game-action image, a lengthy bio also appears on each reverse. The deceased HOF signers include Lumley, Geoffrion, Howe, Mikita, Mosienko, Dumart, Beliveau, Lach, Smith, Kennedy, Horner, Watson, Gadsby, Pronovost, Quakenbush, Stanley, Howell, Schmidt, Kelly, Armstrong, Worsley, Bower, Lindsay, Abel, Mikita and the Rocket, along with deceased builders/referees/linesman Storey, Ivan, Sinden, Pollock and Keith Allen.
The living HOF members who have signed include Francis, Ullman, Giacomin, Hall, Hull, Bossy, Sittler, Gilbert, Keon, Dionne, Mahovlich, Park, McDonald, Clarke, Barber and the Esposito brothers. The majority of the signatures in the group have been executed in thin blue marker and present beautifully, with just light handling wear to the postcards themselves. We should also note that the most of the set sports matching serial numbers, with a few mismatched cards (each serial number is listed over the lower reverse).
