Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

Requiring a two million-dollar payment to the NHL to secure the franchise, the Los Angeles Kings joined the league as part of the 1967 expansion, with the colours purple and gold chosen as they were traditionally associated with royalty. Ready to add the “crowning” pieces to your Kings or expansion collection, we have an especially rare and desirable inaugural season Kings jersey accompanied by late-1960s/early-1970s Kings gloves. Rawlings labeling with 48 sizing resides on the inside hem while the original Kings’ crown team crest that features embroidered detailing sits centered over the front, with “20” sewn to the sleeves and verso in single gold twill. The distinct overlapping V-neck points to first season use during the preseason and/or regular season, with evidence visible of a former alternate captain's "A" on the breast with residue outside of the outline of the "A", possibly dried glue. There are numerous repairs around/near the numbers as most 1st year jerseys were sent to the minors – as such, this jersey was most likely recycled to the minors and had a number change. A few dark marks are visible, with wear to the material over the sleeves, with light pilling to the interior. An additional team repair is also visible, situated somewhat near the the right elbow. The gloves – while not a matching pair, are Cooper Professional models in Kings colours with screened crowns, with the outline of a “3” decal over the crown on the right glove, and outline of a “17” decal over the crown on the left glove (different numbers also appear within the interiors). Showing heavy wear throughout, we should note that Getty Image #145425954 (March 12, 1968) is showing players wearing this model of glove, but without numbers on the cuffs. Additional Getty Images from the early-1970s of Bob Pulford (#71655472) and Harry Howell (#73103310) show them wearing this model of glove with numbers on the cuffs.
