Two groups of World Wide Gum cards, both of them called “Ice Kings” back in the day, are offered up here, with the more familiar 1933-34 (72-card) issue represented by an even four dozen, six of them recently inspected and graded by KSA, including the set’s three kingpins. Cards of Howie Morenz (4 VGE), King Clancy (2 G) and Aurele Joliat (5 EX) have English text on the reverse, the same as Nels Stewart’s RC (3 VG), while bilingual text is on the backs of rookie cards of 11-Roy Worters and 22-Ace Bailey, both at 3 VG. Bilingual backs are observed on all but 12 of the raw entries, with five commons making it to VG-EX, while a light crease and/or corner wear send two dozen others to the G to VG range. Most notable are HOFers 8-Siebert RC, 16-Horner RC, 25-Dutton, 27-Barry RC and 31-H. Smith, with 13 lower grade (P or F) examples including 10-Day, 23-Oliver RC, 30-Bill Cook RC and 40-Primeau RC. ...And now on to the less frequently seen ’37-38 cards (40 of the set’s 135 total), with 51-Busher Jackson (VG+) among the most attractive cards and joined by crease-free condition leaders in the VG-EX neighborhood (a few make it to VG-EX+ or EX); #s 56, 63, 70, 71, 72, 76, 78, 82, 83, 98-Gainor RC and 134. Another dozen are in the G to VG range with no unsightly creases and feature rookie cards of 97-Cecil Hart, 114-Buddy O’Connor and 135-Bill Stewart, as well as 68-Bun Cook and 123-Mike Karakas. Completing are 16 low grade (P or F) representatives including 23-Apps, 65-Joliat (P) and 96-Art Ross. Check out all our images – this is an interesting group of pre-war collectibles.
