Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/27/2021
The first goaltender for the legendary Toronto Blueshirts franchise, Harry "Hap" Holmes backstopped the Torontos to their only Stanley Cup championship in 1914. Three additional championships would follow throughout his HOF career including with the Victoria Cougars in 1925. The AHL’s annual award for the top goaltender is also named in his honour. Passing in 1941, any and all signatures from the iconic keeper are extremely hard to locate, with the last example Classic Auctions was able to offer occurring a decade ago. This period one-piece stick has been team-signed by members of the 1936-37 IAHL’s Cleveland Falcons including Holmes, the Falcons’ General Manager, and it is accompanied by a matching 1936-37 Falcons program. A Joseph Choquette “Hand Made Special” model possibly used by a member of the Falcons with faded stamps and a heavily toned shaft, the blade, shaft and knob all feature period tape, with approx 14 signing the shaft in dark ink, with the majority of the signatures hard to decipher on the equally-dark shaft. Signers include Holmes, along with Bud Cook (brother of Bill and Bun), Albert Holway (Stanley Cup winner with Montreal Maroons in 1926), Yip Foster (Boston Bruins/Detroit Red Wings), Frank Daley, Fred Robertson and others. The stick shows heavy wear, with the signatures heavily blending into the background as mentioned. The program is 6” x 9” and originates from a New Haven Eagles matchup with intact line-up and just light to moderate handling wear. A hologram has been affixed to the stick, with a PSA/DNA LOA to accompany.
