Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Born in the mid-1880s and representing a number of historic early clubs including the Cobalt Silver Kings, Ottawa Senators and Victoria Aristocrats, Walter Smaill won consecutive Stanley Cup championships with the Montreal Wanderers in 1907 and 1908, and famously appeared in the C55 and C57 hockey card sets as well as the 1910-11 Sweet Caporal postcard release. This Richmond Hockey Club cabinet photo of the 1925-26 “E. T. League Champions” pictures Smaill, with any and all photos of earlier stars that were featured in the “C” sets extremely hard if not impossible to find. At 8” x 9 ½” and affixed to a larger mount at full dimensions of 12” x 14”, the team is listed above and the players beneath including Smaill, with the 41 year old depicted standing at far right, in referees sweater holding a whistle. There is some light corner wear to the mount along with toning and minor spotting, with the photo itself exhibiting just very light surface wear.
