Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

Two groups of 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee cards highlight this offering, with a complete set housed in 9-pocket Ultra Pro pages and a (loose) near set seven cards shy of completion. We’d say EX-MT and NM examples combine to dominate the complete set, with some better/worse among the rest and barely a crease spotted. What is observed is light toning on the back and intermittent subtle toning in some of the bottom (front) borders. The appealing rookie card lineup is headlined by those of Coffey, Kurri, Savard, Moog, Murphy and Stastny, with most EX-MT but a left edge notch sending the Coffey RC to EX at best, similar to the one in the near set. The latter has a roughed-up #1-Bourque card, with the remainder a tad less than the set, with centering issues more plentiful; the assembler obviously built a “best” set. Checklists in both groups are unmarked, with four (OC) extras to note (379, 380 x 2, 381), along with similar toning and a curvature in cards in both gatherings. Meanwhile, the ’85-86 representatives (in pages) are without the key Mario Lemieux RC but are otherwise complete, with NM-or-better examples appearing to account for the vast majority. An Al MacInnis rookie is NM with a diamond cut, while Gretzky, Lindbergh, Gilmour and Neely cards are notable condition exceptions. There are duplicates of MacInnis RC (EX+), Mario’s 262-Rookie Scoring Leaders card (EX+) and two second-year Yzerman cards (both with diamond cuts). Completing is a complete 330-card set from ’89-90, with most cards NM-MT-or-better but with a little something sending Sakic (edge notch) and Leetch (tiny wrinkle) rookies to below NM. Several options await the new owner here. The missing cards in the ’81-82 near set are #s 31, 110, 175, 252, 392-Gretzky RB, 395-Stastny RB and 396.
