Despite playing in the shadow of his younger more successful brother, Dave Dryden carved out an impressive goaltending career in both the NHL and WHA which included designing the very first mask-cage combination, with these models now commonplace in the modern game. Attributed to his lone WHA season with Chicago in 1974-75, we offer a stick used by the netminder. A Louisville Slugger Northern Pro model with “D. Dryden” stamped to the upper shaft and “1” handwritten, the original white tape remains over the blade, upper shaft and knob, with a layered strand just above the handle. “Chicago” is also handwritten to the underside beneath the knob. Solid with no cracks or breaks visible, there are marks to the taped section of blade as well as the paddle, with additional wear to the shaft. This particular model was used by Dryden with Buffalo (1972-74), but due to the handwritten “1” which he only wore with Chicago in 1974-75, the stick is attributed to his time with the Cougars (Dryden wore #30 with Buffalo from 1972 to 1974, #1 with Chicago in 1974-75 and #28 with the Oilers from 1975 to 1980). Additionally, Getty Image #502545477 (Feb 19, 1975) shows another close but not matching Louisville model used with the Cougars, with the offered earlier-style model most likely remaining from his time with Buffalo and used later with the Cougars.
