Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
The 30th year of NHL hockey, the 1946-47 season witnessed the traditional rival Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs battle for Lord Stanley supremacy, with the Habs topping the regular season, and the Leafs taking home the sport's greatest prize. Produced during the period in 1947 to be used as a teaching aid in Quebec, we have a large framed Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs "Les Editions Schola" lithograph multi-signed by 20 legends. At 27" x 37" and entitled "Tableaux Filteau-Villeneuve" across the base, this attractive dual-sided lithographed display sports a desirable folk art quality, with an especially colourful hockey scene with Montreal Canadiens players battling the Toronto Maple Leafs amid excited fans and a winter backdrop. The majority of the signatures are in blue marker, and include HOFers Jean Beliveau (D. 2014), Henri Richard (D. 2020), Dickie Moore (D. 2015), Johnny Bower (D. 2017), Bobby Hull, Bob Gainey, Guy Lafleur, Rogie Vachon, Serge Savard, Guy Lapointe, Jacques Laperriere and Yvan Cournoyer. The litho has been set in a 31" x 42" frame.
We should note that one of the Habs’ depicted is modeled after a famous image of HOFer Charlie Conacher, with “Droits Reserves – 1947 – Copyright Lithographie au Canada” appearing over the bottom right. The reverse offers a beautiful summer lake scene with boating and fishing and matching text. The additional signers include Marcel Bonin, Noel Price, JG Talbot, Pete Mahovlich, Andre Pronovost, Phil Goyette and Ralph Backstrom, with the signatures displaying well with no issues. Exhibiting a few surface marks and blemishes, the litho displays especially well, with a bit heavier wear over the right corner. There is also wear to the frame to note.
