Guarding the creases of numerous clubs in the AHL and WHL before making his NHL debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1955-56, goaltender Ed Chadwick enjoyed parts of five seasons with Toronto, and later served as a scout with the Edmonton Oilers during the 1980s. This team-signed stick was used by the Fergus native in 1957-58. A CCM Pattern Made Custom Pro model with “Made to Order for Chadwick” stamped to the upper shaft, with stamps from “Love & Bennett Ltd” and “Brown’s Sports” also gracing both side of the lower shaft. The original black tape is in place over the blade and upper paddle, with now-darkened white-over-black tape on the knob. Showing heavy game use with considerable wear to the blade including a pair of large cracks, there is also an additional crack to the paddle, chip to the handle and heavy wear throughout the shaft. Approx 16 have signed one side of the shaft and paddle, including Tim Horton (somewhat light but easily readable, with a portion of the signature over the handle’s striping accent), along with fellow HOFers Bob Pulford, Dick Duff and Frank Mahovlich (rookie signature – heavily faded but readable), as well as Stewart, Morrison, Migay, Baun, Smith, MacNeil, Chadwick and others, with most of the signatures quite worn/faded. The 1957-58 season was Mahovlich’s first, and playing in four games in 1956-57, the stick may originate from that season.
