Awarding the American capital an NHL franchise in July of 1972, the Washington Capitals began play in the 1974-75 NHL season and have earned 13 division titles, with the franchise’s first Stanley Cup recently hoisted in 2018. This Capitals #10 jersey hails from the club’s earlier days in the mid-to-late-1970s, specifically the circa 1976 to 1979 time-frame, with a number of players wearing the #10 during the era including Doug Patey (1976-77), Bob Girard & Walt McKechnie (1977-78) and Rolf Edberg (1978-79). Wilson labeling with listed “44” sizing remains firmly sewn to the collar, with a loop-style fight strap utilized. Styled with “Washington Capitals” across the chest in individual, single twill letters, rows of stars grace the upper chest and sleeves in matching material, with “10” sewn to the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill. There is evidence of a former nameplate, and considering the custom-shortened hem, the jersey was likely last worn by a short player and possibly recycled for following training camps and/or pre-seasons. Heavy game-wear is present throughout with numerous stick and puck marks, with a few burns also visible as well as a pair of team repairs to each sleeve.
