Spending the bulk of his early career in his native Czechoslovakia with TJ Sparta CKD Praha, Jiri Hrdina won gold with his nation at the 1985 IIHF World Championships before making his NHL debut with Calgary, in 1987-88. From his swan song season in Pittsburgh, we have a Penguins jersey worn by Hrdina in 1990-91. A Maska label is affixed to the collar, with the vintage durene sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 50. Styled with the classic Pens fully embroidered team crest, “38” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with “Hrdina” across the affixed nameplate in single black twill. Sporting heavy game-use with marks, burns, pulls and scrapes throughout, there are also team repairs, with examples situated on the front (2) and sleeves (8). Hrdina was traded from the Calgary Flames to the Pens on December 13, 1990 with this jersey made up for him from an older set. The Penguins had leftover home and road jerseys from the 1989-90 season with the 1990 NHL All-Star Game patch which they wore until October 1990 when the Chicago Black Hawks - the host of the 1991 NHL All-Star Game - filed a complaint with the NHL, so the Penguins started wearing their set 2 jerseys if possible, but as there was a shortage, some players had to wear older set jerseys.
