Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

Some sharp and crisp O-Pee-Chee cards from the 1970s lead this lot, with over 300 from ’76-77 boasting seldom seen and impressive smooth edges and sharp corners. We would say MINT examples abound, although to note is that they’re not all the same height or width. There is heavy duplication at times, with between four and nine of the same card and not a whole lot of star power. Hall of Famers 90-Gilbert (2), 95-Bucyk (2), 120-Cheevers (5), 126-Gillies, 129-Lemaire, and 160-Giacomin (9) make appearances, as do a few semi/minor stars, with some four dozen unmarked team checklists carrying some appeal. No cards numbered above 236 are present. Meanwhile, two complete (396-card) sets from ’83-84 include one with “MINT” marked on the outside of its 400-count box. We cannot concur in every single instance, but NM-MT to MINT examples are the norm, with some occasional condition exceptions; 29-Gretzky is NM, with significant wax staining to the front of the Scott Stevens RC. A second set is not quite as nice; in the NM to MINT range with touched corners more plentiful and a small light crease spotted in the Stevens RC. Plenty of Gretzky “specials” can be anticipated, with a packed 400-count box housing duplicates and some triplicates but none of the key or Gretzky cards, save for an extra Stevens rookie. A little mixing and matching is a thought, with rookie cards of Lindbergh, Carbonneau, Housley, Larmer, Naslund, Nicholls and Bellows also coming your way.
