Backstopping the Jersey Hitmen for a trio of seasons beginning in 2012, goaltender Chris Funkey followed this with four NCAA seasons with the Penn State Nittany Lions – including in 2016-17, the season the school earned its first Big Ten Tournament Championship. This goal mask was worn by the Illinois native during his time with the Nittany Lions, including in the 2015-16 home opener on Oct 4th. A Bauer model with intact cage, back plate and strapping and featuring a beautifully-executed blue and silver design with lion emblems over the sides and chin section, a “Penn State” decal also graces the forehead (covering the Bauer logo). The design was done by Head Strong Grafx – with their logo over the upper reverse, with a bible quote added to the back plate along with “Funkey” in stylized letters. Three different images from the 2015-16 season including the aforementioned home opener seems to show the exact same mask, with the graphics appearing identical including the placement, but none of the image are in high enough resolution to be called definitive photo-matches.
Sporting great game-use with numerous marks along with chipping to the surface – most prominently over the chin section, there is heavy wear and discolouration to the lower straps, with a bit of red paint transfer over the right side. As mentioned, the mask was worn during the 2015-16 season where Funkey appeared in 4 games, and when considering the amount of wear, it was most likely used again during the 2016-17 season (Funkey again played in 4 games), and in practices during both seasons. Funkey began using a new mask in 2017-18 (his third of four seasons with the Nittany Lions).
