After looking through well over one thousand O-Pee-Chee cards from the mid-1970s, here is our report: Cards that were handled and enjoyed are what to expect if you’re the winning bidder, with a mix of crease-free EX-ish cards (the minority), examples in the VG neighborhood and low grade entries comprising the four stacks and nothing high grade. Larry Robinson’s rookie card is missing from the 1973-74 pile, with decent Billy Smith (RC)(EX+) and Bobby Orr (ST)(EX) contributors, but hammered Schultz and O’Reilly RCs and most key star cards in between – see what we mean? Most 1st Series cards have grey backs, with white backs dominating the 2nd Series and three unmarked but creased checklists to mention. From ’74-75 is a pile 20 short of being complete, with a checklist and a Bob Gainey rookie the only keys not present, but multi-creased low, low grade cards of Bowman, Cherry, Potvin, Salming, Dryden and Orr All-Star and not much above VG amid the rest. Overall, much more respectable is the near set (missing 21) from ’75-76, with however Orr and Orr All-Star not present, a multi-creased Dryden, marked/creased checklists and a Harold Snepsts RC (F) kind of underwhelming, although plenty of VG to VG-EX cards are to come upon. Close to 40 cards are not present among the ’76-77 representatives, with surprise, surprise (not), the four most important/valuable cards (Trottier, Orr, Dryden, Williams RC) standing out on the missing list and joined by several other stars. Condition is better though, with VG to EX cards accounting for the majority. Some relatively cheap fun and multiple options are up for grabs here.
