Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
One of only five players in history to hit 20 or more home runs in their rookie year before July, Wally Berger enjoyed a successful career with four different MLB clubs throughout the 1930s. The Chicago native also led the league in home runs and runs batted in, in 1935, and was just the seventh NL player to hit 200 career home runs. This lot includes a pair of 1930s typed letters including an example signed by HOFer Warren Giles on Cincinnati Reds letterhead, dated “November 22, 1938”, with mention of Berger’s upcoming 1939 contract and the salary of $10,000 for the season. The second letter dated “November 28, 1938” is addressed to Giles and on Berger’s personal letterhead and is the response to the Nov 22nd letter (unsigned). Also included, we have examples of Berger’s 1933 Goudey and 1935 Diamond Stars cards as well as his 1938 Our National Game pin on its original backing, with each in lower grade – with a large crease to the Goudey card and surface wear to the pin. The Giles signature has a light area at the start of the signature, while both letters show light handling wear, with some rusting from a previously affixed staple on the Giles signed letter.
