Winning 78 of his 102 bouts including 43 by knockout, Johnny Greco held the Canadian welterweight title from 1946 to 1952 before losing his life in an automobile accident at the early age of 31, in December of 1954. Beginning his pro journey and ascension to stardom in 1940, Greco defeated Dave Castilloux for the Canadian Welterweight championship in 1946, and would defend the title until 1952 in five bouts. This lot contains the bulk of the Greco memorabilia collection, with six framed displays/photos including original artwork published in the New York-World Telegram in 1944 by renowned sports artist Willard Mullin, four large scrapbooks with period newsprint clippings, four magazines with Greco featured on the cover including the July 1943 and Dec 1946 issues of The Ring, and more! The lot also contains 28 complete issues of The Ring (1946-1950), along with a few additional magazines and modern Journal de Montreal boxing posters.
The framed displays include the aforementioned Mullin artwork (18” x 22”), with editorial notes and moderate wear, followed by a pair of multi-photo displays which include five bout-action images in one (13 ½” x 56”), and posed images in the other (15 ½” x 43 ½”) including a photo signed by boxer Sammy Angott. Each frame shows heavy wear. The remaining displays include a pair of framed photos, along with original artwork (13” x 16”). The scrapbooks all feature newsprint clippings, with one example housing Greco’s 1942 20th Century S.C. Club boxing contract and addendum. The copies of The Ring magazine all show light to moderate handling wear and display well, including the issues that feature Greco on the cover.
