Winning 78 of his 102 bouts including 43 by knockout, Johnny Greco held the Canadian welterweight title from 1946 to 1952 before losing his life in an automobile accident at the early age of 31, in December of 1954. Beginning his pro journey and ascension to stardom in 1940, Greco defeated Dave Castilloux for the Canadian Welterweight championship in 1946, and would defend the title until 1952 in five bouts. Obtained with other Greco items offered, we have his Professional Boxing Welterweight Champion of Canada trophy and framed colourized photo. Produced to present to the champ in an unofficial capacity for his years in the ring, the large trophy stands approx 29” in height and features a 12” x 19” wooden tiered base. A trio of boxers including a pair on pedestals are mounted over the base, topped by a domed cover over colonnades with mounted winged Nike figure. Engraved plates state the particulars including “Johnny Greco”, “Welterweight Champion of Canada”, “March 12th, 1951” and “From the fans of Notre Dame de Grace”. The photo pictures Greco in a boxing stance, with “National NY” over the bottom right, framed to approx 17” x 22”.
The trophy sports expected surface wear to the base and metal components, with a few dark marks over the dome section. There is additional surface wear to the engraved plates, with each of the mounted boxers perfectly secured but able to swivel on the base. The framed photo exhibits minor wear to both the photo itself as well as the frame.
