Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

A legendary figure in both Canada and the United States, John Reed Kilpatrick was raised in New York City and attended Yale, competing in football and track. Drafted into the United States Army in World War I, Kilpatrick received the Distinguished Service Medal among others, and was recalled to active military duty during the Second World War where he was promoted to brigadier general. Kilpatrick later served as overseer of Madison Square Garden for more than 25 years, and was enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame as well as the College Football Hall of Fame. Possibly one of his final signatures, hailing from the year he passed in 1960, we have a postal card signed by the noteworthy athlete and executive. At 3 ¼” x 5 ½”, the postal card has the intended recipients address on the front along with an affixed stamp and “Feb 3, 1960” NYC postmark, with Kilpatrick signing the reverse in blue ballpoint, adding a personalization and the date of “2/2/60”.
The signature displays well and remains completely dark with no fading, with light wear to the postal card itself including a crease, along with tape residue over the upper reverse corners. There are also a few handwritten notations beneath the signature.
