Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

The first North American major professional hockey team to feature player numbers on the front of their jersey, the Chicago Cougars joined the WHA in 1972 as an original franchise, and competed in the league for a trio of seasons. Folding after the 1974-75 season, the Cougars player-owners Ralph Backstrom, Dave Dryden and player-coach Pat Stapleton were unable to secure needed funding, with most of the Cougar players going to the expansion Denver Spurs in a dispersal draft. Exceptionally rare, we have an original Chicago Cougars team jacket from the early-to-mid-1970s. Produced by Butwin with their label affixed to the interior near the top clasps on the left side along with a “XXL” size tag residing along the collar, the solid green nylon jacket features the team’s green and gold colouration on the wool cuff and collar bands. A tackle twill crest with “Chicago Cougars” chain-stitched is sewn to the left breast, with “Chicago Cougars” appearing over the upper reverse in single gold twill letters. Exhibiting light wear throughout with no unsightly marks or damage, the jacket displays beautifully.
