Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

The coveted 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie card of Wayne Gretzky almost always is the focal point of any lot or set in which it’s involved, with the example headlining here displaying very well for a 3 VG example. That’s when it’s held at arm’s length and viewed straight-on, for tilting the KSA holder at an angle reveals the grade-lowering flaws. We spot four indentation “lines” (not conventional creases), with a two-inch diagonal one descending from the top edge and cutting through Wayne’s head/face, while a more obvious horizontal line is near the middle of the boards to the right of Gretz, making its way into the hockey pants region and looking to have made a light crease. Again, not a card that’s hard to look at, with the accompanying cards as follows: Two second-year cards (#250) are graded 6 ENM and 5 EX respectively, with Wayne’s All-Star issue from the same year slabbed 6 ENM. The remainder are all “regular” issues, with three of them earning marks of 8 NMM; ’81-82, ’83-84 and ’84-85. An ’82-83 entry (4 VGE) has light creases, while completing are ’87-88 #53 at 6.5 ENM+ and ’88-89 #120 at 7 NM, the latter picturing Gretzky early in his time with the Los Angeles Kings. The king of NHL scorers awaits, with just two of the holders (and not the RC holder) exhibiting a scratch (and not scratches) on the front.
