Commemorating the gold medal victory won by the Edmonton Mercurys while representing Canada at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Ralph Hansch and his remaining living teammates were invited as guests to the Olympic festivities in Calgary in 1988, which included Ralph taking part in the prestigious Olympic torch run, and we offer items from the 1988 and 2002 Games that originate from his personal collection. Included, we have the Canadian Olympic track suit worn by Hansch in the relay (three accompanying photos show Hansch in the track suit including an example with teammates, with one photo framed to 12” x 15”), Hansch’s Olympic certificate (8” x 11”), Hansch’s signed and laminated 1988 Olympic “Gold Medalist” guest pass (4” x 6”) and regular guest pass (3” x 5”), 12 1988 Olympic ticket stubs including 8 for hockey and 4 for figure skating, a 2002 Team Canada jersey signed by 16 living members of the Mercurys for the 50th anniversary including Hansch, a Team Canada 2002 Olympic souvenir puck signed by Hansch along with teammates Al Purvis (captain), Monty Ford, Bill Dawe and Eric Patterson, and a framed photo from the 2002 Olympic Games picturing gold medal goaltenders Curtis Joseph, and the Mercurys’ Ralph Hansch and Eric Patterson, with all three signing (15 ½” x 19”). An LOA from the family of Ralph Hansch will accompany.
First, the Olympic track suit has Sun Ice labeling with “XL” sizing, with Olympic crest over the left breast, with a second large logo on the reverse. Just light overall wear is exhibited. Next, the Team Canada jersey sports Nike size 48 labeling, with each signing on or near the team crest in black marker, with the signers to include Al Purvis (captain), Monty Ford, Bill Dawe, George Abel, John Davies, Robert Dickson, Don Gauf, William Gibson, Robert Meyers, David Miller, Thomas Pollock, Al Purvis, Gordon Robertson, Louis Secco, Francis Sullivan and Eric Paterson. The remaining ticket stubs, photos and passes all show light handling wear.
Added to the Olympic roster just months before the Games which took place in Oslo in February of 1952, Ralph Hansch backstopped the Edmonton Mercurys who represented Canada to the gold medal, and is noteworthy as the only netminder in Olympic history to wear the number “0” jersey. The Mercurys has previously gone undefeated representing Canada at the 1950 World Championships, and immediately after their epic tie with the US that allowed the maple leaf to capture gold at the 1952 Games, the Mercurys also won the inaugural Ahearne Cup tournament in Stockholm, Sweden. From the personal collection of Mr Ralph Hansch who passed away in 2008 at the age of 83, we have a number of important treasures and keepsakes from his time with the Mercurys in 1952 including an extremely rare puck used during the Olympic Games, his glove, skates and chest protector also used at the Games as well as his Olympic blazer and Mercurys jacket, and much more!
