Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Joining once again, in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens, Classic Auctions is pleased to offer a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the storied club's comprehensive archives. A number of historic specimens direct from the famous team including unique displays that were once marvelously displayed in the hallowed Montreal Forum and later at the Bell Centre are available, with an endless array of legendary and monumental players featured that all proudly once donned the sacred jersey of the mighty Montreal Canadiens.
A member of the Montreal Maroon’s famous “S Line” with Nels Stewart and Hooley Smith, Charles Albert “Babe" Siebert enjoyed a Hall of Fame career that included appearances for four different NHL clubs along with a pair of Stanley Cup championships, first with the Maroons in 1926, and then with the New York Rangers in 1933. Babe retired after the 1938-39 NHL season to take up the head coach position for the Canadiens, but it was never to be, sadly losing his life drowning while on vacation with his family in the summer of 1939. Originally displayed at the hallowed Montreal Forum and most likely later at the Bell Centre, we have a framed painting of Babe Siebert by noted Habs artist Michel Lapensee. At approx 11” x 15” and executed in water colours, Siebert is masterly depicted, with his name and tenure listed on the matte. The artist has signed, adding the date (1992), with the work double-matted and framed to approx 19” x 23”. The unique painting is flawless, with some damage to the text on the matte and light wear to the frame including a few blemishes. We should also note that despite the painting clearly being Babe, “Earl Siebert” is listed on the matte, with this an uncorrected mistake. An LOA from Classic Auctions will be included.
