Named the Edmonton Athlete of the Year in 1972, Steve Carlyle was drafted by Montreal in 1970 but never played in the NHL, and spent four seasons in the WHA with Edmonton. From his third season with the club, where he appeared in 73 games, we have an Oilers jersey worn by the Lacombe native in 1974-75. Worn for just the first half of the season, with use concluding at the end of December of 1974, the Oilers would wear sweater sets by calendar year and not season, meaning the offered jersey would have been first worn by Carlyle during the second half of the 1973-74 season (Jan 1st until the conclusion of the season). A Rawlings label with “46” sizing is affixed to the collar, with a Steichens tag situated over the inside hem. Styled with the classic oil drop team crest in layered tackle twill, “20” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with “Carlyle” across the affixed nameplate in white twill. There is also evidence of a former nameplate as expected, as per the history of the jersey and the practice of use during calendar years.
Exhibiting great game-use with heavier wear to the material over the sleeves, there are a few stick marks over the front, with scuffs, pulls, burns and areas of faint paint transfer to the sleeves. There are also a few small holes visible, with team repairs present on the right sleeve and lower reverse. It should also be noted that Carlyle played 28 games in 1975-76 before retiring on February 2, 1976, and with Jack "Killer Carlson" Karlson (Karlson Brothers) acquired by the Oilers on March 10, 1976, there is a strong possibility he wore the jersey as well for the 10 games he played with Edmonton, as he also donned the #20 sweater for the club.
