The focal point of this 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee gathering received a Beckett Raw Card Review mark of 4.5, with Wayne Gretzky’s cherished rookie card featuring not perfect but pleasing centering. We concur; VG-EX or a notch or two higher appears to be the appropriate range, with the bottom corners exhibiting obvious touches. The accompanying near set, housed in 9-pocket pages is a rather uniform looking ensemble, with EX, EX+ and EX-MT cards dominating and a smaller percentage better/worse. A diamond cut on the otherwise EX-MT+ Gordie Howe card, to a lesser extent on the Mike Bossy second-year card (o/w EX+), a VG-EX+ Bobby Hull and a crease in Dryden rendering it a condition exception are all notable, as are unmarked checklists and team checklists. Best among the three “New NHL Entry” cards is the Oilers example (EX-MT), with a stain affecting the Whalers and the Jets VG+ with multiple print mini circles, while all three checklists have issues sending them to VG or lower. A Ken Linseman RC is nicely autographed with Bobby Hull and 14 other duplicate bonuses also featuring signatures, although lower grade card condition is to note. Wayne Gretzky and company from ’79-80 always merit consideration.
*The one card required to complete the set is 202-Morris Lukowich RC.
