Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Best known to Canadians despite lengthy service as a politician in the UK, Frederick Arthur Stanley was the Governor General of Canada for approx half a decade, with his most enduring legacy the trophy originally donated to be awarded to Canada's top-ranking amateur hockey club. From the era of his time prior to carrying the title of Lord Stanley of Preston (1886-1893), we have a handwritten letter signed as “Fred Stanley”. At approx 4 ¼” x 7”, the single fold-over sheet features fountain pen text on three pages, with Stanley signing at the end as “Fred Stanley”. The signature displays beautifully, with the ink slightly fading over time from black to a dark brown. The letter itself sports moderate handling wear with a vertical crease that runs from top to bottom, with some toning and discolouration along said crease on the reverse of the letter. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
