Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Two of the earliest hockey signatures in existence, with their rarity equally matched by the noteworthy prominence of the signers, we have autographs from Edward Stanley, 17 Earl of Derby and son of Lord Stanley, along with F.C. Chittick, goaltender for the legendary Ottawa Senators, when the club was recognized as the Generals in the 1890s. Stanley was a member of the Rideau Hall Rebels in the late-1880s/early-1890s – or officially, the Vice-Regal and Parliamentary Hockey Club - formed in 1884. First, we have a handwritten letter from Stanley. At just under 5” x 7 ½” and dated “29-08-09”, the correspondence on Post Master General letterhead has been signed in dark fountain pen, with some very minor fading occurring over time. The Chittick signature has been placed on a small die cut maple leaf with “Canada” in black (3 ½” x 4 ¼”), with the thin dark ink signature flawless. The Stanley letter exhibits toning along with a few dark spots, with glue and paper residue on the reverse of both items from former scrapbook mounting.
