Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021

We usually like to go chronologically but let’s get to big Wayne right away and his two crease-free 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie cards. We see the Gretzky RC that’s part of a complete set as a VG-EX or VG-EX+ example with touches at three corners and wear on the bottom left corner denying it a higher grade, while the other displays as an EX-MT specimen, but with slight warping observed after removal from a screwdown holder. The aforementioned ’79-80 set is housed in a binder and looks to be mostly EX or better, with some rather crisp EX-MT to NM random pulls. There are also EX-MT Howe and Hull duplicates, with unmarked checklists and mostly unmarked team checklists noteworthy. Most of the rest of the collection involves the 1970s, with a near complete set of ’70-71s missing just the Orr and Howe regular cards for completion. Condition however is low grade, with not many making it past VG and the majority in the P-F-G realm. Nicest of the RCs is an off-centered (VG) Clarke, with Park VG and Perreault and Sittler both Poor. An EX+ #252-Orr Conn Smythe card is also to mention, with the rest of the ‘70s show detailed on our website.
Next up is a near set (missing two commons) from ’73-74, with 1st Series cards mostly of the grey back variety and VG to VG-EX, with 2nd Series entries (mostly white backs) a little better and Robinson (VG-EX+) and Smith (VG) rookies notable. ...A near complete ’74-75 set (missing Lafleur and Delvecchio) is all over the place condition-wise, with Bowman (EX-MT (OC)), Cherry (VG-EX) and Potvin (VG+) best among the RCs and the other key rookies creased/lesser, with the overall average VG. ...An EX Bryan Trottier rookie leads a ’76-77 ensemble (missing just #217-Habs Checking Line), with EX to EX-MT cards dominating, while there’s a mix of VG-EX to NM entries among a ’77-78 set of 396, with marked checklists and mostly unmarked team checklists and some 400 extra commons featuring heavy-at-times duplication and lesser quality. A Mike Bossy RC (EX+) anchors a ’78-79 complete set that includes lots of NM-or-better cards to discover, while a starter set of ’80-81s (missing 100+) includes RCs of Messier (EX-MT (OC)), Bourque (EX) and Gartner (EX). ...Three of the four World Hockey Association sets are present and is often the case, the more challenging ’75-76 issue is the least-best shape. There are some nice EX-MT and NM cards but the key/star cards are not among them, with a Mark Howe rookie VG. A ’76-77 WHA set is mostly EX+ and EX-MT, while a curvature in cards from ’77-78 is observed but they’re quite sharp (NM-or-better dominate), save for the marked checklist. ...Completing the stash are ’83-84 Vachon cards; we surmise a group of two-card panels that was carefully wrapped is complete and ditto for a box of regular “singles”, along with a binder home to some three dozen hammered old Parkhurst and Topps cards from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Back damage, tape and paper loss are the flaws, with however the lineup including Harvey, Sawchuk, Hall and Geoffrion. All sorts of possibilities and lots of fun are what our consignor’s collection offers.
