Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Debuting with the Chicago "Orphans" in 1898 was California native Frank Chance, signed by Chicago as a catcher and an outfielder. He reportedly first balked at moving to first base (1903) but became part of Chicago's famous Tinkers to Evers to Chance double play combo. By the time this little premium was issued the Cubs were the class of the National League, with Chance also managing the team. The 1-1/2-inch round "cards" like the one offered here were obtained back in the day by those purchasing Colgan's "Violet Chips" or "Mint Chips" chewing gum. There was one "Stars of the Diamond" in each 5-cent package. Meriting NM-MT 8 recognition years ago at PSA, this example is the one and only to be awarded such a lofty mark, with none higher and 23 other "attempts" resulting in three NM 7s. Bragging rights await the high bidder!
