Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Villeneuve’s tenure with the Lucky Strike BAR Honda team is represented in this large lot of 19 items which includes several race-worn pieces. It is highlighted by four dual-signed pairs of gloves dating from 1999 to 2001 along with three sets of dual-signed boots from the 2000 and 2001 F1 seasons. The race-worn excitement continues with five pieces of Nomex racing underwear (two signed). Also included in this lot are four signed pieces of Villeneuve’s personal team clothing (two button-up shirts, a zip-up t-shirt, and a winter jacket). Finally, there are two signed visors, one of which was rejected by Villeneuve. Originating from Jacques’ personal collection, a signed LOA will accompany.
A good set of gloves are part of every great racer’s arsenal and there are five pairs in this lot which Villeneuve used in races between 1999 and 2001. First up, there is a red Sparco pair from 1999 which are signed in black ink on the leather area on the back of each hand. The leather on the fingers and palms show incredible wear and the interior cuffs each have “JV10” in blue ink along with a date stamp inside the right cuff from February, 1999 (exact day is difficult to discern).
Next up are two black pairs of Sparco gloves which feature tan leather. Coming from the 2000 F1 season, both have plenty of evidence of use. One pair feature “JV 10 2000” on the interior cuff of each glove and the right glove does feature lines of blue ink in the palm. The other pair has palms and fingers which are well-worn and the interior cuff of each says “JV6” while also exhibiting some staining from sweat.
Two more pairs of dual-signed gloves are included in this collection and they come from the 2001 F1 season. One of them is a white Sparco pair which has tan leather accents. Villeneuve signed the leather on the back of the hands for these and the palms and fingers demonstrate race use. On the interior cuff, look for the number 10 stamped inside. The final pair of gloves, however, is a bit different. They are white Puma gloves with Petronas logos and Villeneuve has signed them on the cuff. Written on the interior of those cuffs is a notation of “JV – OC/01 NO GRIP”, which could indicate rejection by Villeneuve.
A total of three pairs of black suede dual-signed race-worn boots can be found in this lot and two of them come from Villeneuve’s 2000 season. Both exhibit some signs of wear, but there are also inscriptions and date stamps found inside each boot. The first pair says “JV 7” and “2000” inside each tongue along with a stamp dating to February of that year. The second pair has “JV 7” twice and “2000” in the tongue of the left boot while the right boot’s tongue has “JV 7” twice. Both of the “JV 7” boots have a date stamp of March 29, 2000. All four boots are signed in silver ink.
The final pair of boots dates from 2001 and show interesting wear as the ankle of the left boot has a hole worn through the white leather. Both boots have the same notation in the tongues of “2001 JV C”.
The four pieces of clothing issued to Villeneuve as part of the Lucky Strike BAR Honda F1 Team in this lot appear to be unworn, but all bear large and strong black ink signatures. The two size L button-up shirts feature multiple sponsor patches on the front and back. On each, his autograph appears on the upper left and the tags feature his initials in black ink. The green zip-up t-shirt is size XL and has several sponsor logos to go along with the signature on the upper left. As for the winter jacket, it is an intriguing piece which has a wide array of logos on it – including a large red Lucky Strike circle on the back. Villeneuve signed the size L jacket on the upper right.
The assortment of off-white Nomex racing underwear is race-worn from various stages of his career and includes one set of long Sparco underwear, an Alpinestars ¾ length pair, and a pair of pyjama-style bottoms which bear Stand21 patches. There are two signed pieces in this grouping of Stand21 undergarments as well. The racing hood has an autograph on its right side while the racing turtleneck is well-worn and Villeneuve signed its interior on the upper right side. All these pieces of Nomex racing underwear demonstrate evidence of wear and pilling.
Rounding out this lot are two signed Bolle visors from his time with the Lucky Strike BAR Honda F1 Team. While both are signed, one was rejected for race use by Villeneuve and the other demonstrates some wear and is likely to be race-worn.
