Toward the end of Villeneuve’s time with the Lucky Strike BAR Honda team, he remained among the world’s top F1 drivers. This giant lot of race-worn and team-issued items primarily dates from his 2002 and 2003 seasons and includes five pairs of dual-signed race-worn gloves and four pairs of dual-signed race-worn boots to go along with a strong selection of Nomex racing underwear (five pieces, one signed), race-used visors (two signed), and four pieces of team-issued clothing (three signed) which includes a racing jacket. Originating from Jacques’ personal collection, a signed LOA will accompany.
A pair of Villeneuve’s boots from circa 2003 adds a bit of intrigue to this lot. These black suede boots were produced by Alpinestars, but the logos on the sides and toes have been covered up in black tape. Looking carefully at the sides will show the outline of the logo underneath. Villeneuve signed both booths on the toe on top of the tape, but some silver ink carried over to the shoe as well.
There are also two pairs of dual-signed black suede Sparco boots from the 2002 races which bear bold silver ink signatures on the outer side of each boot. Both show mild signs of wear near the outer heel. One pair has notations of “2002 JV1” written in blue pen on the inside of their tongues while the others have “2002 JV3” in black ink in the same spot.
Two pairs of gloves come from Villeneuve’s 2003 season and the first are race-used white Sparco model with grey suede accents. Villeneuve signed both on the suede area on the back of the hand and each has a notation on the inside of the cuff stating “2003 JV 10”. The other pair of gloves are white Puma brand and have a Petronas patch on the back of each hands. He signed both on the cuff, but the inside notations are intriguing as they state “JV 06/03 NO GRIP”.
If that was not enough, there are three dual-signed pairs of Villeneuve’s gloves from 2002. Of this group, two pairs are white Sparco gloves with grey suede accents that are signed in black ink on the back of each hand. Both pairs show evidence of race wear and have notations in black ink on the inner cuffs. One pair says “2002 JV 4” on each glove while the others have “2002 JV3” and “2002 JV5”. The third pair of gloves from 2002 were produced by Puma and have Petronas patches. They are each signed on the outer cuff and on the interior cuffs, there is a black ink notation of “JV 06/02 NO GRIP”. The white gloves do have extensive marks and pilling, indicating some level of use.
The four pieces of clothing issued to Villeneuve as part of the Lucky Strike BAR Honda F1 Team in this lot appear to be unworn, but two of them bear large and strong black ink signatures. The two size L button-up shirts feature multiple sponsor patches on the front and back. On each, his autograph appears on the upper left and the tags feature his initials in black ink. The zip-up sweatshirt is size XL and has several sponsor logos to go along with the signature on the upper left in black ink to go along with his initials in the collar tag. As for the jacket (size L), it is an intriguing piece which has a wide array of logos on it – including a large red Lucky Strike circle on the back.
For fans of race-worn visors, there are two great treasures to be found in this lot. First, we have Villeneuve’s 2002 Monza Test visor from Swiss One which is signed in black ink around the left eye. A piece of tape noting the event is affixed to the visor as well. The second visor comes from the 2003 season and shows a Honda logo at the top. Signed over the left eye, the Swiss One brand visor also features notations of “2003-13” and “3TO” in black ink.
The assortment of off-white Nomex racing underwear is race-worn from various stages of his career and includes one pair of ¾ length Sparco underwear, an Alpinestars ¾ length pair, and two pairs of Sparco socks. There is one signed piece in this grouping, a Stand 21 racing t-shirt which has been signed in black ink on the upper left. All these pieces of Nomex racing underwear demonstrate evidence of wear and pilling.
